HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE CALIBRATION

Calibration lab in the area of relative temperature and humidity that has qualified equipment and stack for the calibration of temperature-measuring tools, characterization of isothermal media (ovens, freezers, auto keys...) and relative humidity measuring equipment.

The lab is accredited by ENAC (138/LC10.098) for the calibration of platinum resistance thermometers, digital thermometers with direct reading with thermoresistance sensors or common metal thermocouples, characterization of isothermal media, as well as calibration od hygrometers and thermohygrometers. (Check scope on www.enac.es).

What is temperature?

It is one of the basic magnitudes of the International Unit System and measures the internal energy associated to the movements of the particles of a system.

Given the importance of defining when something is cold or hot, the process of temperature measuring has undergone a great development throughout history.

Given the growing need to improve the exactness of temperature measuring, an International Scale was agreed on, being the ETI-90 currently in force..

The temperature unit in the International Unit System is the Kelvin K, although it is usual to use other units such as the ºC (degree Celsius).

Types of temperature sensors

Thermocouples

When exposing an electrical conductor to a temperature gradient, an electromotive force is created in this zone, depending on the temperature gradient and the length of the conductor. Different types of thermocouples (K, T, J, N, E, R, S, B, G, C and D) allow to cover the range from -250 ºC to 3000 ºC

Resistance thermometers

The resistance that an electrical conductor shows when it faces the electrical current flux is related to its temperature, mainly due to the effects of electron dispersion and vibration of the atomic web. The measuring range is more restricted, between -200 ºC and 850 ºC

What does calibration consist of?

Calibration consists of comparing the values indicated by the measuring instrument that is to be calibrated with the values of the pattern masses that are used in specific conditions and with a defined method, that takes into consideration the influence of the different factors that affect the reading of the equipment that is to be calibrated. The calibration is carried out in a controlled and documented way.

The calibration ensures the reliability of the measurements of the calibrated equipments and to warrant the adequate functioning in the facilities and processes where they are used, contributing to increase quality.

The result of the calibration is collected in a Calibration Certificate, where the correction values to be applied in different considered calibration points will be indicated, as well as the uncertainty of those measures.
